As part of the Subliminal History of New York State, we turn west along the Rondout Creek and the D & H Canal to Rosendale, New York, famous for its neumatic cement, the morter of many public buildings in the United States. Partnering with The Century House Historical Society, The Society for a Subliminal State spends the summer tracking the history of the mines. The stories are written into original Shape Note songs and set to a participatory performance taking place in the Widow Jane Mine on July 30, 2006.

The day begins with a Shape Note singing workshop for interested participants led by Jesse.

The video shows the singing of the song Mortal Mortar Made of Death.

Performance and song text written and directed by Carrie Dashow, Shape Note composition and instructed by Jesse Pearlman Karlsberg. Research assistance and location provided by the Century House Historical Society - July 2006.
