How to Make the Picture

A plain piece of paper (not extra thick)
The SAME size as the back of the box (that was cut and measured before)
One image on one side
And another on the other side

Pictures can be done in so many ways! Hand drawn, computer drawn, web pictures, just make sure to leave some on one side and the rest on the other side, so your only showing HALF THE STORY when someone looks through it at first!

How to Use the Ghost Hunter Eye

  1. Place a picture in the end of the box, you may need tape, but if the cuts are not right at the edge the picture should fit snug inside.
  2. Close the back, and the top.
  3. Hold the box up to the light looking through the peephole.
  4. LIFT the top flap to illuminate the picture (front)
  5. Close the top and open the back to show the ghostly other side

When the 'back door' is closed, and the 'sunroof' (top) is open
You can only see the image that faces the viewer (eye) The Back side of the image is INVISIBLE

When the light shines through the back flap and the top is closed you see both images combined

Switching back and forth is easier when you use the Fishing wire attached to the roof.

You can play with the light and images by shining the flashlight as an extra light source. Especially in the dark.

Point the GHOST HUNTER eye with the picture in it towards the sun, a light, or a flashlight. Try it in the dark with the flashlight!

What to Do After

What are some other ways you could you use this way of tricking light?

You can post your ideas and the ghosts you have found, pictures you have drawn up at Ghost Hunter Eye

We can exchange what each of us find in our own refuse!

Eyebeam kindly produced this as a do-it-yourself kit.

Making the Ghost Hunter Tool

  1. Find an empty carton. Any carton will do; however, a juice or milk container works well because of the built-in eyepiece.
  2. Measure the bottom of the box, or whatever you define as the bottom (this will serve as the "back door" for your container. See illustration).
  3. Take a marker and draw a square (minus one side) on the bottom (to make the flap for the "back door") and the top of the box (this will make your "sun roof." If using a juice container, make sure that the "sun roof" is on the same side of the container as the spout. See illustration).
  4. Using scissors or a knife, cut along the 3 lines you drew to make the flaps for your "back door" and "sun roof".
  5. Puncture a tiny hole in the top flap or "sun roof" and the "back door." Take a section of fishing wire (included) for each hole and through the holes, knotting to secure.--The is so you can open and close the "sun roof' and "back door."
  6. Take the measurements of the entire bottom of the box you took in "Step 2" (not just the bottom flap or "back door") and cut a piece of paper that is a little larger than your measurements on all sides. You will use this paper in the Ghost Hunt Instructions-Part 2 to create an image for your container.
